Building Fire - Raymond Terrace

Published: 25 Nov 2020 03:05pm

Just after 3pm, Fire and Rescue NSW were alerted to an automatic fire alarm on William Street, Raymond Terrace, with reports of smoke in the plant room of a shopping centre.

Raymond Terrace Fire Station arrived and confirmed with staff there was active fire and smoke issuing from the plant room and requested additional stations from across the Newcastle Region to attend.

The volume of smoke required firefighters to wear breathing apparatus and use a thermal imaging camera to find the origin of the fire, however no fire could be found and the smoke dissipated.

Crews monitored the plant room while investigating the cause, recommending to building management a faulty compressor may have been the cause.

Approximately 250 people were evacuated from the shopping centre. NSW Ambulance were on scene however no injuries were reported.
