Maddie the Moorhen Rescue - Video - Smithfield

Published: 25 Mar 2022 04:31pm

A Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crew has carefully rescued a Moorhen, caught on a barbed wire fence today at Smithfield, in Sydney's west.

Concerned members of the public raised the alarm around 10am at a business in Woodpark Road.

A FRNSW crew from Smithfield arrived and found the small bird entangled on the fence.

Using pliers, gloves and lots of 'tender loving care,' the crew released "Maddie the Moorhen" from her inverted state and left her in the care of a local vet.

Vision of the rescue: https://vimeo.com/692109603/2b9791219a Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW [external link](FRNSW) said we attend numerous large animal rescues every week, while FRNSW has the skills and equipment to rescue a large animal, we encourage the community to be aware of prevention measures. Including awareness of livestock location, checking fences and insuring an ample supply of water.
