Hazmat emergency at shopping centre - Port Macquarie

Published: 23 Mar 2022 03:31pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) are currently managing a Hazmat emergency in Port Macquarie on the state's north coast.

A refrigeration gas leak at a supermarket inside a large shopping centre in Park Street has forced the evacuation of approximately 400 people by Security staff.

FRNSW Hazmat specialists have set up fire protection and are using advanced gas detectors for atmospheric monitoring of the area.

The shopping centre has been ventilated and a refrigeration mechanic is rectifying gas leak.

NSW Ambulance are also at the scene.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
