Opportunity shop gutted by large fire - Byron Bay
Published: 06 Dec 2022 09:48am
A large fire has destroyed an opportunity shop and warehouse overnight at Byron Bay on the state's far north coast.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) received numerous calls about the fire in the business in Grevillea Street just after 8.30pm.
The first fire crews on scene quickly called in backup as the shop and warehouse began collapsing.
Firefighters used power tools to cut access points through the metal sheet exterior and attacked the blaze from four sides.
Supported by 10 FRNSW trucks and four Rural Fire Service tankers, authorities were concerned about a number of LPG cylinders stored in a taxi base next door and a fallen powerline nearby.
Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a safety measure.
No-one was injured.
Firefighters battled the blaze for six hours and managed to contain the flames to the 18 x 30-metre, two level building, saving nearby properties.
Just after 7.30am today, the fire re-ignited and began smouldering.
It was quickly extinguished by FRNSW crews, who will remain at the property today as a precaution.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
