Large scaly operation for firefighters - Gymea
Published: 26 Sep 2023 01:55pm
A Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crew became engaged in a real-life game of snakes and ladders today, trying to catch a slippery serpent on the loose in Sydney's south.
The crew from Menai fire station was called to Gymea Bay Road around 8am amid reports of a snake inside a house.
When firefighters arrived, the two-metre diamond python made a 'slither for it,' racing out of the home and into a tree in the backyard.
The non-venomous reptilian intruder tried to 'scale' the back fence but was quickly corralled by Firefighter, Carly McLachlan, and bagged.
FRNSW assists the WIRES wildlife rescue organisation with snake-snaring missions in areas where the suburbs meet the bush.
FRNSW Captain, Brady Clarke, says it's not uncommon to find these types of unwanted guests seeking refuge in homes around the Sutherland Shire.
"Our firefighters are prepared for anything, even snake recoveries and we conduct regular training to maintain our snake-wrangling skills to assist the community," Captain Clarke said.
Carly and her colleagues released the python into adjoining bushland without further incident and the rest is "hisstory."
