Chemical Spill Update in Sydney's West - Girraween
Published: 27 Jul 2023 02:35pm
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) continues to work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Cumberland Council to investigate a chemical spillage at Girraween, in Sydney's West.
Firefighters initially responded to the incident in Mandoon Road at 1:30pm yesterday afternoon, with an industrial complex evacuated by firefighters who observed yellow vapour emitting from drains.
FRNSW Hazmat technicians were able to detect toxic chlorine gas coming from an isolated area on the site.
Due to safety concerns operations ceased overnight, but Hazmat firefighters remained on scene to monitor the situation.
Hazardous materials operations recommenced this morning with crews working to locate the source of the chemical and make sure that it is safely contained.
Mandoon Road currently remains closed with all occupants of the site safely evacuated.
FRNSW has sent out information updating members of the local community.
