"VISION ALERT*** Conveyor belt fire at manufacturing facility - Rooty Hill
Published: 07 Feb 2025 03:34pm
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews are still working to extinguish a fire in a heavy-duty industrial conveyor belt in Rooty Hill near Blacktown in Sydney’s west.
Firefighters were initially called to the steel manufacturing premises in Kellogg Road just before 6.00am after reports of a fire in an underground concrete structure.
The blaze, originating from a 100-metre-long heavy-duty rubber conveyor belt system that has collapsed into a concrete pit, remains contained within the industrial complex.
More than 100 firefighters and 26 fire trucks, including specialists from the Hazardous Materials Unit, are actively working to extinguish the fire as well as monitoring the smoke plume and managing potential hazards associated with on-site chemicals.
The site’s infrastructure is effectively capturing all firefighting water runoff, preventing any environmental contamination and FRNSW is collaborating with the NSW EPA to ensure ongoing environmental safety.
Given the fire’s deep-seated nature and the complexities of the industrial environment, extinguishment efforts are expected to be prolonged.
Firefighters are rotating shifts to manage the challenging conditions, with NSW Ambulance paramedics on-site monitoring their health and safety.
Despite the scale of the incident, there are no reported injuries and the broader community remains unaffected.
