New multi-purpose fire engine to protect the Northern Rivers - Grafton

Firefighters at Grafton have received a new multi-purpose Tanker to handle emergencies in the state’s Northern Rivers.
Valued at $660,000, the Mercedes Atego Class 1 Tanker is a “jack of all trades” fire engine.
It features a ‘pump and roll’ capability that allows it to tackle grass fires and bushfires whilst moving.
It also boasts a ‘HALO’ sprinkler cabin protection system, designed to spray water over the cab to protect the crew from enveloping flames during a bushfire.
This model is designated as a ‘specialist HAZMAT’ or hazardous materials tanker, capable of responding to chemical spills, fuel leaks and other dangerous incidents in the region.
FRNSW Acting Assistant Commissioner – Regional Operations, Stephen Hirst, said the new tanker will make a welcome addition to the Northern Rivers fleet.
“The crew can’t wait to put the new fire engine through its paces,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Hirst said, “Its ability to travel off-road when necessary is a major plus.
“The ‘HALO’ protection system will provide local firefighters with an extra layer of protection if they’re ever caught in the path of a large fire front.”
Emergency Services Minister, Jihad Dib, said a number of new FRNSW vehicles have been sent to stations across the state over the past year.
“This is the 16th new fire truck to leave the FRNSW workshop this year, in line with the service’s annual vehicle replacement and Bushfire Tanker programs,” Minister Dib said.
“The NSW Government is proud to invest in these vital fire trucks to support FRNSW in keeping urban and regional communities safe.”
