Fire and Rescue NSW crews save almost century-old boat shed from fire - Putney
Published: 12 Sep 2023 08:55am
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have saved an historical boat shed from fire on the Parramatta River at Putney, in Sydney's north-west.
More than 30 firefighters and eight fire trucks were deployed to Waterview Street as flames engulfed a small building just after 4am.
The blaze then threatened to spread to a nearby complex, which has significance to Australia's early colonial history and has been used as a boat building, servicing and repair facility since the 1930s.
FRNSW crews worked for more than an hour to bring the fire under control, preventing any major damage to the shed.
They've remained in place in case of potential reignition.
Firefighters specialising in hazardous materials (HAZMAT) response used materials on-site to reduce firefighting water run-off, with the Port Authority of NSW attending the scene to help monitor the situation.
Experts from FRNSW's Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) today will work with NSW Police to determine where and how the fire started.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Additional images from the Putney scene are available via the FRNSW website.
