Wickham update - demolition works underway -
Published: 05 Mar 2022 03:47pm
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is continuing operations at the Old Wool Store buildings at Wickham in Newcastle which were completely destroyed by a massive fire on Tuesday.
The fire was the largest emergency incident in Newcastle since the earthquake in 1989.
Firefighters from 376 Merewether are working alongside demolition crews, providing both dust and fire suppression as there are still smoldering hot spots within the rubble.
Demolition has commenced on the areas closest to the adjacent fuel terminal, and ground vibration monitoring is in place for the nearby Sydney-Newcastle high-pressure fuel pipeline.
Other utilities, including gas and electricity, have been isolated on the site to allow this work to be undertaken in a safe and controlled manner.
