Flood zone HAZMAT operation - South Lismore

Published: 07 Mar 2022 02:27pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Hazardous Materials teams are at the scene of a major gas emergency at South Lismore, in the Northern Rivers flood zone.

The floodwaters have compromised materials stored at an Agricultural Supply business in Kruss Avenue.

The water has mixed with the farming products, producing dangerous ammonia gas.

Firefighters in protective HAZMAT suits began entering the building around 9am today and have registered the corrosive and toxic ammonia levels as 'High.'

Local fire crews are managing the emergency with assistance from a FRNSW Hazmat Strike Team, deployed from Sydney as part of the State Emergency Service-led flood response.

They are removing the dangerous products and rendering the scene safe before returning the site to the business owners.
