Firefighters battling intense house fire - West Wollongong
Published: 11 Jan 2023 08:13pm
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews are protecting neighbouring properties as an intense house fire continues to burn tonight in Wollongong West.
Shortly after 3pm, numerous Triple Zero (000) calls were received about smoke issuing from the property in Highway Ave.
More than a dozen fire trucks with more than 50 firefighters rushed to the scene and are still working to extinguish the fire and contain it to the house of origin.
Two occupants made it to safety without injury as the blaze took hold.
An exclusion zone was established as the house contains gas cylinders at risk of exploding.
Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution as part of the burning house's roof collapsed.
FRNSW is being assisted on scene by NSW Police and NSW Ambulance.
Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said FRNSW is attending numerous house fires and that it was a timely reminder for residents to develop their fire escape plan.
"Now is the time for residents to check they have a working smoke alarm and that all members of the family have an awareness of calling Triple Zero (000) in an emergency," he said.
