Firies issue challenge for local Sydney swimming trophy - Bondi

Published: 03 May 2024 01:55pm

Fire and water normally don’t mix but tonight will see a team of firefighters go ‘head-to-head’ with the famous Bondi Icebergs club in a swimming challenge to honour a local ‘legend.’

Edward ‘Ted’ Mulhall, a stalwart of the Icebergs swimming club, was also a retired Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Superintendent, who had his silver firefighter helmet cut in half when he called ‘time’ on his 39 year career in Sydney.

Now, one half of that helmet serves as the “Ted Mulhall” trophy the two teams are vying for.

FRNSW Acting Deputy Commissioner, Cheryl Steer, has playfully stoked the emerging rivalry, encouraging the firefighting team to showcase its camaraderie, teamwork and sheer determination.

“This year, we hope to have the trophy returned to its ‘rightful custodians’ and on display at the City of Sydney Fire Station,” Act. Dep. Comm. Steer said.

“This event is steeped in history, but until last year, had not been held since 2009.

“Whilst there is certainly a competitive edge to tonight’s challenge, I’m excited to see our people come together to honour Ted’s memory, his love for all things swimming and community.”

The Ted Mulhall relay event starts at 6:30pm at Bondi Icebergs Club Pool, 1 Knotts Avenue Bondi Beach.
