Pilot rescued after light plane crashes into hangar - Wedderburn
Published: 14 Mar 2025 04:46pm
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews responded to a light aircraft that crashed into the top of a hangar at Wedderburn in the Campbelltown area today.
At at approximately 9.50am this morning, multiple Triple Zero (000) calls were received, prompting a multi-agency response to the Airport at Lysaghts Road.
Specialist FRNSW rescue crews, including hazardous materials (HAZMAT) experts attended alongside NSW Ambulance (NSWA) and NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).
The aircraft was positioned approximately 5 metres above the ground. Emergency services personnel gained initial access to the pilot using a local ladder, with a contractor's cherry picker on standby.
FRNSW technical rescue specialists assessed the structural integrity of the hangar and executed a ladder slide rescue - a controlled descent technique using a firefighting ladder and ropes - to safely lower the pilot to the ground.
Firefighters set up an exclusion zone around the solar panels on the roof.
NSWA paramedics provided medical assistance to the pilot, who was transported hospital.
Following the rescue, crews focused on hazardous materials management. The aircraft was believed to be carrying unleaded aviation fuel, with minor spillage detected on the hangar roof.
FRNSW HAZMAT experts worked to safely decant and remove the fuel while ensuring the structural stability of the impacted hangar.
Firefighters also applied a red glue solution to seal potential hazardous fibres such as fibreglass or possible composite materials.
FRNSW duties completed at approximately 1.45pm, with the site was handed over to the airport management.
