Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators are assisting Police to determine the cause of a fatal house fire last night at Yamba, on the state's north coast.
Just after 9pm, fire crews from Yamba, Maclean and Grafton were dispatched to the single-level house, within a retirement village in Orion Drive.
As firefighters arrived, they saw a woman, believed to be 73-years-old, suffering smoke inhalation, unconscious outside her home.
NSW Ambulance paramedics performed CPR on the woman as fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus, attacked the blaze.
The resident was unable to be revived.
Police sealed off the scene for analysis today by FRNSW's Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU).
It's the fourth fatal residential fire in NSW this winter.
FRNSW continues to urge the public to ensure all homes are fitted with working smoke alarms.
It is also crucial that households develop a home escape plan in case of fire.
Anyone requiring a home safety visit by their local fire crews can book an inspection via the FRNSW website: https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=9316 [external link]
Firefighters will visit your home, provide important advice and fit a smoke alarm, free of charge, if necessary.
