Large fire in recycling facility - St Marys
Published: 04 Feb 2025 04:26pm
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has deployed more than 100 firefighters and 20 fire trucks to battle a large structure fire at a commercial recycling plant at St Marys, in Sydney's west.
Just after 1.45pm, FRNSW received multiple Triple Zero (000) calls reporting a significant blaze with gas cylinders exploding and thick black smoke visible from the site in Christie Street.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered intense fire activity, with flames reaching 60 metres in height.
Ongoing explosions and stores of chemicals are making it an extremely dangerous and complex operation.
Firefighters, including Hazardous Materials crews, are working to contain the fire, protecting adjoining properties and ensuring all individuals are accounted for.
An 800 metre exclusion zone has been established and evacuations are underway. People are being urged to follow advice from emergency services personnel on scene.
Residents and businesses outside the exclusion zone are advised to keep doors, windows, and vents closed due to potential smoke.
The public is advised to avoid the area.
The incident is ongoing and updates will provided as soon as they become available.
