Body located as Fire and Rescue NSW crews contain fire in multi-storey building - Darlington

Published: 30 Aug 2023 03:00pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have located a body inside a third-floor apartment destroyed by fire today at Darlington, in inner Sydney.

More than 30 firefighters and 10 fire trucks were deployed to attack the '3rd Alarm' blaze in Abercrombie Street, near Ivy Street, around 8am.

FRNSW crews initially entered the building but were forced to withdraw when conditions became too dangerous and parts of the structure collapsed.

They continued to attack the flames from a safe distance outside.

16 people from neighbouring units and businesses were evacuated, while nearby streets were shut-off to enable firefighting efforts and maintain safety.

The fire was brought under control just before midday.

At that time, FRNSW crews were able to enter the damaged unit, where they found the body of a man.

The cause and circumstances surrounding the fire will be investigated.

Engineers will be brought in to assess the structural integrity of the building.

Access to the site remains restricted as firefighting operations continue and NSW Police carry out their examinations.

FRNSW has been assisting residents of the building to safely access their units and businesses to collect essential belongings.

Those who have been displaced are urged to connect with the Australian Red Cross support service 'Register.Find.Reunite.' at https://register.redcross.org.au/ [external link]

The public is urged to avoid the area if possible.
