Major grass fire downgraded to ‘advice’ level - Horningsea Park

Published: 28 Aug 2024 06:26pm

Fire crews have gained control of a large grass fire, that had threatened homes at Horningsea Park this afternoon, in Sydney’s south-west.

The blaze broke out just before 2pm, at a former amusement park site at the corner of Camden Valley Way and Cowpasture Road.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) responded with the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and the Rail Fire and Emergency Service, supported by NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and Transport for NSW.

FRNSW closed the local rail corridor, due to the fire threat, ensuring the safety of commuters.

The train line has since been reopened.

More than 20 fire units, including Bushfire tankers, and 80 firefighters fought the fire, with support from a FRNSW Mobile Command Centre.

Two helicopters were used to water bomb the fierce 10th alarm fire, which was fuelled by strong winds.

The fire spread in an easterly direction over 12 hectares, damaging two buildings, including an abandoned home, as well as multiple outbuildings and a number of caravans and trailers.

One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and another was hit in the eye by smoke debris.

They were both medically assessed at the scene, whilst a civilian was treated for chest pains in their home by paramedics.

Firefighters are now engaged in mopping up operations as they extinguish a small number of spot fires at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
