A working smoke alarm has saved the lives of two adults and one teenager following a house fire in Hurstville Grove in southern Sydney overnight.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews were called to a two-level residential property in Whitfield Parade after reports of house fire just after 3.30am.

Seven trucks and more than 30 firefighters arrived on scene and were faced with large volumes of smoke and fire issuing from the home.

Firefighters quickly got to work and contained and extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes.

The fire caused extensive damage to the ground level, with smoke damage also affecting the second floor.

The occupants safely evacuated the property prior to the arrival of firefighters after being alerted to the blaze by a working smoke alarm.

The three people, along with a neighbour, were assessed on-site by NSW Ambulance paramedics for smoke inhalation and transported to hospital as a precaution.

Investigations are now underway into the cause of the fire however an area of interest is an electric massage chair which was left plugged in overnight.

FRNSW urges residents to ensure they have a working smoke alarm and to test it regularly.
