House destroyed, school evacuated during fire - Wiley Park

Published: 17 Mar 2023 02:48pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have battled a major fire that's engulfed a home and threatened an adjacent school at Wiley Park in Sydney's south-west.

Seven fire trucks, including an aerial platform, responded to multiple Triple Zero (000) calls reporting the two-storey home ablaze in Alice Street, just before 12.30pm.

Firefighters attacked the intense blaze from all sides and from the air as the roof and a side wall collapsed.

Police did a sweep of neighbouring premises and 371 students and 42 staff were safely evacuated from an adjoining public school.

Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, entered the burning home and declared it clear of occupants.

Ambulance paramedics assessed and treated a 20-year-old woman at the scene for stress and breathing difficulties.

One south-bound lane of King Georges Road was blocked to create a buffer for the evacuations.

Fire crews have gained the upper hand and have called in engineers, amid concerns about the stability of the house.

The fire is thought to have started in the kitchen and spread to the roof.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.
