Accessibility

Fire and Rescue NSW has designed its website to ensure content is available to the widest possible audience, on a broad range of browsers and operating systems, including readers using assistive technology or accessibility features. We adhere to web standards and accessibility guidelines to allow for the variety of technology platforms, communication methods, and abilities of website users in the community.

This page provides a guide to using the site with information on:

Online accessibility

Fire and Rescue NSW is committed to ensuring this web site meets best practice guidelines and at least Priority Two requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG). Most pages meet all three Priority levels (also known as AAA) of the WCAG as we believe all users should be able to easily access content on this website.

Disability Discrimination Act

Australian Government departments and agencies are obliged by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 to ensure that online information and services are accessible by people with disabilities. There is also the requirement to make online resources accessible to those people with technical constraints, such as older browsers and lower speed internet connections.

Navigation

The navigation is designed to let all users easily reach the main content categories of the website.

The HTML code for the navigation menu is at the bottom of the page so people using screen-readers do not need to listen to these links before reaching the main content of each page.

Access keys

This site does not use access keys because of inconsistent behaviour across platforms.

Text size

The site uses relative font sizing so users have the choice of setting the font to a size at which they are comfortable reading.

If you would like to change to font size follow the instructions for major browsers below:

  • Internet Explorer 4-5+
Click View > Text Size and select your preferred size.
  • Firefox
Click View > Text Size > Increase Font or Decrease Font.
  • Netscape Navigator 6
Click View > Text Size and select your preferred size.
  • Opera
Use the Zoom toolbar to increase or decrease the page enlargement factor.
  • Safari
View > Make Text Bigger or Make Text Smaller
  1. Links are usually written to make sense out of context.
  2. There are no javascript generated links.
  3. There are no links that open in new windows without warning. In most cases links do not open in new windows. We prefer to let users decide whether or not they want to open a new window or new tab.
